GM News of Interest: Who Owns GMAC??
Cerberus
Capital Management, L.P. is one of the largest private equity
investment firms in the United
States. The firm is based in New York City, and
run by 48-year-old financier Steve Feinberg.
Former U.S. Vice President Dan
Quayle has been a prominent Cerberus spokesperson and runs
one of its international units.Unfortunately as this is a Limited Partnership,
no one really knows where the $$ comes from....
History Founded in 1992, Cerberus
(named for the legendary three-headed dog in Greek mythology that guarded the
gates of Hades) invests
primarily in companies which are near bankruptcy in the hope of making the
businesses it acquires profitable. Feinberg has stated to his employees that
while the Cerberus name seemed like a good idea at the time, he later regretted
naming the company after the mythological dog.[1]
The company has been a very active acquirer of businesses over the past several
years and now has sizable investments in sportswear, paper products, military
services, real estate, energy, retail, glassmaking, transportation, and
building products. In 2006, its holdings amounted to $24 billion. While many of
its peers have bought out companies in order to strip assets and sell on for a
profit, Cerberus builds its reputation on identifying firms that are
undervalued, and assisting in rejuvenating them by working with current
management.[1]
On October 19, 2006, John
W. Snow, President
George W. Bush's
second United
States Secretary of the Treasury, was named chairman of Cerberus. Notable
acquisitions
- Pharmaceuticals - In December
2004, the company announced the acquisition of Bayer's plasma products
business and renamed it Talecris
Biotherapeutics.
- Real Estate - Through
investment affiliate Cerberus Real Estate, the company has been making
direct equity, mezzanine, first mortgage, distressed and special situation
investments in all asset types. It also controls Miami Beach.-based
LNR
Property, a large real estate development and investment firm through
subsidiary Riley Property. Cerberus also controls Kyo-ya,
a Japan based group of entities that owns several Starwood managed
assets in California, Hawaii and Florida.

Toyota's residuals take a dive
Brand's resale values no longer meet forecasts
Kathy Jackson
Automotive News
March 16, 2009 - 12:01 am
LOS ANGELES — Not only are Toyota Division's new-vehicle
sales plunging, but so are residual values on its used cars and trucks.
That is depriving Toyota of one of its best marketing tools: the healthy
residuals the brand long has been able to brag about.
For most of this decade, Toyota's cars and trucks held
more than half their sticker price when coming off lease after 36 months. And
they regularly outperformed residual forecasts by the authoritative Automotive
Lease Guide in Santa Barbara, Calif.
But this year the average three-year-old Toyota brand
vehicle is expected to retain only 46.5 percent of its value, below the 50.5
percent projected by the guide in 2006.
"Toyota has gone from such a strong position,"
says James Clark, general manager of Automotive Lease Guide. "The change
has been pretty dramatic. In today's economy, resale value is a good selling
point. Now they don't have that."
Of course, it is an industrywide trend. According to the
guide, 2006 model vehicles with leases that ended in January and February
retained an average value of 40 percent of their sticker prices. That is 6
percentage points lower than the original projection.
'A nightmare'
"It's becoming a nightmare, says Norwood, Mass.,
Toyota dealer Ernie Boch.
"In the past, if you had a 4Runner on lease and it
came back, a dealer would buy that in a minute," says Boch. "You
could make money.
"Now it's about 10 percent less, so it's going right
back to Toyota. We don't want those cars. We're not going to take that
car."
Toyota's trucks have been particularly hard hit, says
Clark.

General Issues: Dealers Last Resort, Whack the work force
ALISHA WEBB Automotive News February 2, 2009 - 12:01 am ET U.S. car dealers are slashing their work forces, laying off service writers, secretaries, sales personnel, you name it, in a gritty effort to cope with crashing profits. The collapse of vehicle sales that began in September has devastated already dwindling dealer profits. In 2008, the average dealer lost money on new-vehicle sales for the third straight year, according to the National Automobile

Senate approves tax break for auto loan interest
Harry Stoffer
WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Senate voted today to make loan interest and sales taxes on vehicle purchases deductible from federal income taxes. The proposal, championed by the National Automobile Dealers Association, was added to an economic stimulus bill under debate in the Senate. The vote was 71-26. The provision was not in a House-passed version of the more than $800 billion package of spending increases and tax cuts. A conference committee will decide whether the provision stays in. The bill is a top priority of President Barack Obama. If the measure passes, taxes on auto loans will be deductible for the first time since 1986.

General Issues: Ford's Spit-Out Spark Plugs Hit Mechanics in their Wallets
Company Covers Up Problem, Lets Consumers, Mechanics Pick Up the Tab By Joe Benton ConsumerAffairs.Com
May 31, 2007
More and more Ford mechanics and technicians are siding with consumers, charging that the troubled automaker is fully aware of a major flaw in Ford engines that causes the power plant to spit out spark plugs at random and without warning.
They complain that Ford is covering up the defect while squeezing and short-changing technicians and mechanics tasked with repairing the problem for Ford consumers.
The trouble is, no one is listening to the warning and Ford continues to stonewall and cover up the spit spark plug hazard, according to Ford technicians and mechanics.
Ford did not respond to requests for comment.
The spit plug is both costly to repair and a safety hazard for people riding in the Ford truck as well as those nearby. Several Ford vehicles have burst into flames following a spit plug.
A Master Ford Technician at a dealership in Georgia told ConsumerAffairs.Com that the “situation regarding these engines and the spark plugs blowing out is not unknown to Ford.”
“Quite the contrary, they are well aware of it and have been since the 5.4 liter Triton engine was released,” this Ford mechanic said. “This same concern also affects other engines in Ford's modular engine family, such as the 4.6 liter single overhead cam V-8s and the 6.8 liter single overhead cam V-10,” he warned.
Ford dealerships routinely insist to consumers complaining about a spit spark plug that they have never heard of such a thing happening.
A second Ford technician confirmed to ConsumerAffairs.Com that, “Ford has known about this problem since the first year the Triton V-8 was introduced. I encountered my first one in 1997 on a '97 F150 with 30,000 miles on it. At the time, I thought it was a fluke, partially due to the high mileage (30,000 in less than six months).”
All of the Ford technicians insisted that their names and cities not be used, fearing they would be fired for speaking publicly about the problem.

GM News of Interest: Incentives to Dealers
Incentives to Dealers
GM rose 18 cents, or 2.9 percent, to $6.40 at 4:01 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The shares have tumbled 74 percent this year, the most among the 30 companies in the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
GM also is expanding its incentives to dealers by offering cash bonuses for sales financed by lenders other than GMAC, now 51 percent owned by Cerberus Capital Management LP.
The program began last week and includes most 2008 and 2009 models, said Richard Joseph, director of Cincinnati-based Joseph Auto Group, whose dealerships include Chevrolet and Cadillac outlets. McDonald declined to comment.

GM News of Interest: GM Assures Buyers in Ads After GMAC Retreats on Loans
Oct. 16 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Corp., facing a drop- off in loans from former lending unit GMAC LLC, will begin advertising tomorrow to reassure buyers they can still borrow from hundreds of banks.
The push by the largest U.S. automaker comes four days after GMAC said it would lend only to buyers with top credit scores. The ``Financing that Fits'' campaign also will emphasize existing rebates of as much as $6,000 on some 2008 models, GM spokesman John McDonald said.
Using advertising money to highlight access to loans underscores automakers' challenge in these ``incredibly unusual times,'' as Chief Executive Officer Rick Wagoner put it this week. Deutsche Bank AG analyst Rod Lache said Oct. 14 that the industry sales rate in October may be the worst since 1983.
``It speaks to the difficulty GM is having,'' Marshall Nickles, a professor of economics at Pepperdine University in Los Angeles, said in an interview. ``Given the public impression that loans might not be available, they need to send this message.''
GM, based in Detroit, will run the ad campaign until Nov. 3 on television, radio and the Internet, McDonald said. Customers will apply for loans using a Web-based system and be able to choose from many participating lenders, he said.
North American sales and marketing chief Mark LaNeve recorded radio commercials for the campaign. ``I know that some of you may be worried about getting financed,'' he says in the ads. ``The truth is, a market like this creates some great opportunities,'' such as low down-payments.

Is Toyota Infallible??
Anonymous writes "17th Sep 2007, 13:04 Hmmm...who won the 2007 Motor Trend Truck of The Year Award? Seems likes it was the Chevy Silverado... NOT the Tundra! One might also ask that if the Tundra is so great, why then do each of the domestic truck makers sell more than Toyota?
17th Sep 2007, 19:02 "NUMBER of recalls, and # of affected vehicles are two different things. Toyota is still the best." Regarding # of affected vehicles, Toyota recalled more vehicles then it sold in 2005. That's not good for an auto maker many of you proclaim is infallible. Certainly the American automakers are not infallible either, but I have not seen anybody make that claim. At the end of the day, it is still Toyota having massive engine failures and doing public mea-culpas as the precarious myth of their quality is shattered. I feel sorry for anybody who has a late model Toyota, including a number of friends of mine who have lost thousands of dollars watching in astonishment, as the Toyota's they had been convinced were beyond reproach, self destructed before their eyes.
